Crail Thrash - FastCar Photos and Pics Gallery

With well over a month having passed since the last 'Magazine Day' at Crail, the brakehorses were champing at the bit to be let loose in the company of Fast Car. Word had spread that apart from the hardcore drag strip action and usual show n' shine, Opposite Lock would be returning from Ireland for more tarmac terrorism and general rear wheel drive anarchy. These are the boys to watch if u want to see how to donut, powerslide, flick and all the rest the proper way. They make it look so effortless, you'd think even your granny could be doing it in the local supermarket carpark...

The day kicked off with a big bang. Unfortunately it was due to some of our strathy friends being involved in a small multicar crash on the drive up. Fortunately the cars seemed to sustain all the damage, though claims of whiplash seemed to be a popular theme for the day. Even Tricky got in on the action when a young female showed him how fast she could drive in reverse (unfortunately forgetting to brake) during the car sumo.

Thankfully the day stayed dry and being quite cool lead to some very competitive times being posted on the 1/4mile. The fastest car on the day was a dark blue escort cossie that ran a 10.7 with a serious amount of grunt under the bonnet. Just compare that to Kev's P1 that was 5th with 12.7 or the 2.0turbo DAX that was 2nd with 11.4. The strip certainly seemed to move well with the numbers being limited and it was great to see some of the pot holes patched on the return road. The strip action was interupted for the Dave Coates display. This guy certainly knows how to ride a bike, not that he sat on it very often. More like stood or ski-ed along side next to it. Probably most impressive though were his wheelies where he managed to snap his rear number plate off.

Meanwhile elsewhere there was the usual slippery smoky action going on on the drifting oval and the show and shine was in full swing. As well as the usual individual entrants, some of the local bodyshops, car dealers and car clubs had set up displays showcasing their best rides. SG had just spent two months building their latest monster in the form of a turquoise, purple and black sparkly Celica thats so in your face it actually works very well! Most of the cars on display had bright vibrant colours that just drew you towards them. Not least the orange Hyndi Coupe and the yellow Ferrari. The FC team along with the lovely Victoria, though chose CRD's latest Jap monster as the winner. This time CRD have gone all supra'd up with a 350bhp wide arched, looking mean and sleek metalic blue Toyota. Certainly an impressive piece of cold metal.

For the evening displays first up was the car sumo featuring Fastcar's Tricky followed on by Pyromaniac. Michel Kooy's jet engined quadbike took 6 months to build and has over 1000bhp to play with. That in something that weighs less than a stripped out mini. Not only does it shoot flames out the after burner and go (as well as sound) like a bat out of hell, but it can handle too. It had no problem doing some donuts on the slippery oval surface and happily drove round the bends at speed. Not to be out done though were the crowd favourites over from Ireland with a fair few friends. Not only was there plenty Irish support in the audience for the Toyota twin cams, but they had also brought a Scooby and an old 5 series over just for the fun of it. These boys were able to get not only the tyres but the crowd smoking. Everyone likes to see skilled driving, but the Irish boys take it to another level with their static donuts round people and Deliverance style duels with each other. The crowd were loving it though when the tyres kept spinning and just didn't want to pop. Rubber was flying everywhere from the rear wheels but still they didn't want to explode. Eventually they did and sparks flew from the bare metal.

As has become tradition at Crail (and other venues) the day ended with a Wet-T competition. This time to keep the crowd titillated 6 scantily clad dancers from Seventh Heaven in Glasgow just happened to be passing by. They certainly knew how to keep the guys happy and were joined by several brave souls from the audience. The real competition though seemed to be behind the fence to see who could get the best pictures with their mobile phone. As always the girls went down well and it looks as though the Irish lads can't wait until the next one!
