Sunday, 22nd of June 2003

Up at 9am on a Sunday, it's becoming a regular occurrence as more and more car and cruise type events begin to appear over summer. This time it was the turn of the RoSPA Young Driver of the Year competition held at the Police Training College in Jackton, E.K.

Word had been left on the forum for a few weeks and the interest was good, the only down side was trying to crawl out of bed so early on a Sunday morning and lots of people being unable to make it as they had been out drinking on the Saturday night (might be an idea for next year to try and make it a Saturday morning).

I arrived around 11am having got lost as usual. I'm sure they have some comedian working for Multimap as it only printed out about 5 "directions" to get from my front door to Jackton casually forgetting to tell me to miss 3 roundabouts and use the force to decide which one it really meant to turn right at.

Half the entrants appeared to have come by way of Strathycruise and the quality of driving was really good on the whole. A quick assessment out on the road followed by a manoeuvrability test on the cones was all that was required so most people were only around for half an hour.

Brian from On Board Training was also on hand to do some ABS and traction control demonstrations for people (including getting me to stand in front of his HGT while he accelerated towards me at 50mph only braking at the last moment!).

The results have not been announced yet but when they are we will post them on the forum. A big thanks to everyone who turned out on the day and also to the examiners who came along to conduct the assessments.
